Native habitat: this annual is found in dry grasslands or open woods, prefers dry sandy or gravelly soils in open areas.

Right away you will notice this plant’s uniquely shaped petals. Many people think they look like the antlers of an elk.

This plant is an annual that reproduces each year by seed. Luckily, most years it produces large amounts of seed that will give you many new flowers in the spring.

This plant’s scientific name helps to describe the flower. The genus name, Clarkia, is named for William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Meriwether Lewis collected a specimen of this plant on the return trip in 1806. The species name pulchella means “ somewhat beautiful or pretty” in Latin.
