Lyall’s Penstemon
Penstemon lyallii
Figwort Family

Plant color: Pale lavender
Plant height: 12-32”
Bloom time: June - August
Native habitat: Rocky slopes in foothills and montane zones from southern BC and Alberta to Montana and Idaho

David Lyall, an early botanist and plant collector in the Northwest, collected this plant in 1862, “between Fort Colville and the Rocky Mountains”.

The long, narrow, pointed leaves of this penstemon make it easy to distinguish from other penstemons.

Penstemons are a true American plant growing only in North America! This large genus of perennial plants has approximately 275 species. Its popularity as a garden ornamental is growing worldwide as landscapers and gardeners alike discover it beauty, adaptability and the wide-variety of the genus. Once established they need little care and will provide long lasting, colorful blooms. In the wild penstemons are often found thriving in poor soil and dry, rocky conditions. By watering your new, young plant for the first year you will give them a jump-start on getting established.
