Pasque flower

Pasque Flower
Anemone patens
Buttercup Family

Plant color: blue to purple
Plant height: 2-14 inches tall
Bloom time: early spring, soon after or even during snow melt
Native habitat: grasslands, dry meadows and mountain slopes

This delightful plant is the first sign that spring is on its way. You’ll find pasqueflower appearing along with yellow bells (Fritillaria pudica) on grasslands and dry meadows soon after snow melt or sometimes during snow melt.

The home gardener should note that in the wild these plants disappear once it becomes dry. Don’t despair if your pasqueflower does this. Mark the spot where it grows so you don’t accidentally plant something in its spot then watch for it the following spring.

Pasque flower roots are also brittle so take care when transplanting it into your garden. They do respond well to a little fertilizers and an extra shot of water but too much water will rot them.

All this work really is worth the effort when the extremely hairy, silver-looking leaves and large flowerhead of the pasgueflower makes it appearance in your garden in early spring.

The Ktunaxa (Kootenay) used pasqueflower medicinally; the volatile oil extracted from the plant most likely producing most of the benefits. Be aware he plant is considered poisonous.

What appears to be 5-6 petals are actually sepals, the plants has no petals.
