Prairie smoke

Prairie Smoke or Old Man’s Whiskers
Geum triflorum
Rose Family

Plant color: pink to yellowish petals, purple-red sepals
Plant height: 12-16”
Bloom time: April to August
Native habitat: Sagebrush plains to open, subalpine ridges. This plant is commonly found on dry, gravelly soil.

This native plant is a gardener’s favorite since it provides year-round interest to a garden. The fern-like leaves are lovely and the pink, urn-shaped flowers draw your attention with their unusual look. When the flower goes to seed the plant’s look changes again providing yet another look to your garden.
It grows readily in moist to dry soil and likes sun to partial shade. It also spreads well from seed if you let the seed heads remain on the plant.

The common name for this plant comes from what it looks like when it has gone to seed. The seed heads can look like the white whiskers and hair of an old man.  When many plants are seen from a distance their seed heads can also look like low-lying smoke. I’ve also heard people refer to this plant as “mouse on a stick”.

The species name refers to the flowers (florum) that are usually in threes (tri).
