A member of the Pea or Legume Family this plant is a nitrogen fixer. Bees and butterflies are attracted to it.
The bottom flowers bloom first and this ring of blooms moves up the spike as the season progresses.
Meriwether Lewis wrote in his journal, “this plant is a stranger to me”, when he collected it in Nebraska in 1804.
