Thank you for buying a native plant from Windflower Native Plant Nursery. Your purchase helps create a bit of Montana natural history in your own yard as well as restore a piece of native Montana. This plant was grown by seed I collected locally in an ethical manner.
Purple prairie coneflower
Echinacea angustifolia
Aster Family (Asteraceae)
Color: pale purple
Plant height: 1-3 feet tall
Bloom time: mid summer to fall
Native habitat: The Great Plains (dry prairie)
The medicinal use of this native plant has caused the wild population to plummet due to irresponsible gathering. Growing this plant in your garden not only provides you with some of the largest blooms in the native wildflower world but promotes its survival.
This species of Echinacea is more compact and drought tolerant than other Echinacea species. Its stiff stem and stiff “cone” are characteristic. The long, slender taproot helps this plant survive moderate drought conditions once it is established.
Bees are attracted to its blooms.
